Background Information:
The building was designed by Ernesto Korrodi and constructed in 1929. Originally, it was intended to serve as the municipal market, which was previously located in Praça Rodrigues Lobo.
The site (along with the Fonte Luminosa and the former Banco Nacional Ultramarino building, also designed by Ernesto Korrodi) was once home to the Church and Convent of Santana, which were eventually demolished in 1916. Only portals remain, having been relocated and incorporated into the Casa do Guarda of Leiria Castle.
After undergoing restoration, the space now functions as a cultural center, complete with a stage at the southern end of the building. Additionally, the Teatro Miguel Franco is housed in the western wing, accommodating over 200 seats.
